It goes without saying that it is thanks to the original Macross series that Robotech ever came into existence. As you all know the original Macross series is the first of the three Robotech sagas. Macross was at first going to be a parody of the famous Mobile Suit Gundam (and other animes), but it didn't, and ended up becoming one of the most popular anime series ever. Since the Macross series debuted in 1982 many sequels have been created; use the sub-menu on the left side to go through everything that has been released in the Macross World.
SUPER DIMENSIONAL FORTRESS MACROSS
(36 episode series - ran from 1982 until 1983)
Producer: Akira Inoue
Director: Noboru Ishiguro
Character design: Haruhiko Mikimoto
Mecha design: Kazutaka Miyatake, Shouji Kawamori
Studio Nue / Tatsunoko Productions / MBS
Without a doubt, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross is one of the best series in anime history. The story begins with the crash landing of an alien spaceship on Earth in the year 1999. It would take 10 years for humanity to repair the "Macross" and it would also take that long for the aliens to come looking for it. Once the aliens, known as the Zentraedi, discover where the ship has landed, a battle begins for possession of the battle fortress. Funny things happen during this two year war; 70,000 people get stranded aboard the Macross and the singing of a young 16-year old girl known as Lynn Minmay, contaminates the Zentraedi with human emotion.
A giant space battle fortress, transforming Valkyrie fighters, wonderful music and a great storyline is what this series is comprised of. But we shouldn't forget about the great love story between the young pilot named Hikaru Ichijo and his commanding officer Misa Hayase. All of these ingredients turned the Macross series from a simple anime into a great drama and one that will be remembered forever.

Big West / MBS / Shogakukan
With the popularity of the Macross series, it was decided that a feature film would be created retelling all of the events that happened in the original series. And in the summer of 1984 a film called Macross: Do You Remember Love? was released in theatres and was nothing short of a hit. This film had all the same ingredients that made the Macross series great; although some of the storyline was changed. All the famous characters from the series are in this film such as Hikaru Ichijo, Misa Hayase, Roy Focker and Lynn Minmay.
One of the low points of the original series was the animation, well they fixed that in this movie, the animation is nothing less than amazing; thus making Macross The Movie one of the most talked about movies of all the time.
MACROSS: FLASHBACK 2012
(30 minute music video, 1987)
Producer: Haruhiko Mikimoto
Director: Shouji Kawamori
Character design: Haruhiko Mikimoto
Big West
This follow up to the Macross movie contains all the music from the original Macross series and from Macross: Do You Remember Love? It lasts 30 minutes and is basically a big music video. You get to see many excerpts from the movie and some from the original series, all the while Minmay is singing her memorable songs. There is a story behind all of this and that is that Minmay is performing her last concert on Earth before leaving aboard a new Macross class battle fortress.
It should be noted that the song, "Do You Remember Love?" is one of the ten most popular anime songs of all time. Some of the others being the theme song from Space Cruiser Yamato and Galaxy Express 999.
MACROSS II: LOVERS AGAIN
(6 episode OVA, 1992)
Producers: Minoru Takanashi, Keiji Kusano, Shinichi Iguchi, Hirotake Kanda, Hiroaki Inoue, Hiroshi Kakoi
Directors: Ken'ichi Yatsuya, Kenichi Yatagai
Character design: Ken'ichi Yatsuya, Kenichi Yatagai
Mecha design: Junichi Akutsu, Jun Okuda
Bandai / Big West / MBS / Shogakukan / Hero / AIC / Oniro / Macross Project
This could be considered the first real sequel to the original Macross series. However it does not seem to follow the happenings of the Macross series, rather the developments of Macross: Do You Remember Love? The movie focuses on a young journalist named Hibiki Kanzaki, an ace Valkyrie pilot by the name of Sylvie Gina and a Marduk girl named Ishtar. For the first time since the First Space War, Earth is being threatened by the Zentreadi, again. The alien girl Ishtar is rescued by Hibiki from a damaged alien vessel and brought back to Earth. On Earth she learns much about human culture and tries to find the "love song". Meanwhile another galactic war is raging in Earth's orbit and only Ishtar, Hibiki and Sylvie can save the Earth from being obliterated.
Despite the fact that this movie has great animation, as in Do You Remember Love?, it lacks very much in storytelling.
MACROSS PLUS
(4 episode OVA, 1994)
Producers: Minoru Takanashi, Kaya Ohnishi
Directors: Shinichiroh Watanabe, Shouji Kawamori
Character design: Masayuki
Mecha design: Kazutaka Miyatake, Shouji Kawamori
Studio Nue / Bandai Visual
Although this little mini-series doesn't follow the traditional Macross storytelling, there is a great story behind it and it also takes animation to the next level. With it's superimposed computer graphics the animation in Macross Plus is totally awesome. The story revolves around three people, two guys and a girl, who used to be great friends when they were younger but have since grown apart. The two guys, Isamu Dyson and Guld Goa Bowman are both test pilots at the New Edwards Airbase on planet Eden, for two different companies who are competing against each other in Project Super Nova. The girl, Myung is also on Eden as the producer for a new computer generated rock star named Sharon Apple. Not only do Isamu and Guld fight over the project, but over Myung as well. In the end after a few plot twists, Sharon Apple has a plan of her own.
One thing which is present in this mini-series and is traditional to Macross is the music. From the techno/dance music of Sharon Apple to the memorable opening theme song "Voices", the music is great.
MACROSS 7
(52 episode series + 3 encore episodes - ran from 1994 until 1995)
Producer: Kaya Ohnishi
Directors: Tetsuro Amino, Masami Shimoda
Character design: Haruhiko Mikimoto
Mecha design: Kazutaka Miyatake, Shouji Kawamori
Big West / Bandai Visual / Hero / Shogakukan / MBS
10 years after the original and classic Macross series a new series is finally made. This one tells the story of the Macross 7, a new Macross class battleship which is on a colonization mission to the center of the galaxy. Some famous characters from the original series are in this one, notably Maximillian & Miliya Genius who are both in command. Also one of their seven daughters, namely Mylene is in this series and plays an important part. Things don't go smoothly however as the Macross 7 meets a mysterious alien race who can steal the life force from human beings. Only the "Fire Bomber" rock band, whom Mylene is a part of, can save everyone with their music.
The animation seems to be of the same high quality as in Macross Plus, but I believe that CGI is used a bit more.
MACROSS ZERO
(5 episode OVA, 2002)
Producer: Minoru Takanashi
Director: Shoji Kawamori
Character design: Takuya Saito
Mecha design: Shoji Kawamori
Big West / Bandai Visual
The lastest Macross series takes us back to before the launch of the giant battle fortress and places us in the fight between the U.N. and the Anti-Unification Government. The familiar Roy Focker is a prominent figure in each episode, however the story centers around a pilot known as Shin who ejects after losing his aircraft over the island of Maya. He discovers a primative people living on the island, nearly devout of technology and lead by a young priestess named Sara. What he soon discovers is that Sara can call upon an ancient power and this is what the latest fight is all about.
Once again the marriage between computer and cell animation is top noch in this series and the sound is as well.
